Haus in Ihlow

What is the long description of your project?

The long, narrow plot is located in the Brandenburg village of Ihlow and is characterized above all by its variety of fruit and deciduous trees. An open space in the middle made it possible to carefully integrate the new building between the trees. The house offers views into the depths of the garden on both sides. Discussions with the family led to the central idea of a large room in which everything takes place: cooking, eating, playing, working. Life in this room should be directly connected to the surrounding nature in every season. The “living room” with kitchen and oven is the center of the house. A barrel roof from industrial construction creates a spacious room with simple means, which is directly connected to the garden by large French doors on both sides. On the south side, the terrace and pergola form an extension of the interior. On both sides of the living hall are two rooms with bathrooms. The storage room forms an entrance area and, together with the kitchen, divides the living hall into zones. The house is constructed using a monolithic design. The masonry made of insulating bricks is slurried on the outside, so that the joints and thus the craftsmanship of the individual stones in the façade are visible. Inside, the building materials used remain visible: unplastered masonry, exposed wood surfaces on the stud walls, sealed screed flooring, and the metal shell elements of the roof. The materiality of the components, especially the visibility of the roof, can thus be experienced throughout the house and creates an atmospheric density.
